Tom Brown Scholarship, Wiley College -- $8,195.07

The Tom Brown Scholarship is one which assists a student of Wiley College, one of the 11 historical Black Colleges. Beginning in 1987, the former Central Illinois conference, named a scholarship in memory of the Rev. Tom Brown, a long-time supporter of the Marshall, Texas-based school.  Rev. Brown was often the one who stood at the microphone after the presentation by the visiting Black College intern and would move that the annual conference session take up a special offering for Wiley College.  Rev. Brown’s daughter, Sharon Brown, is the director of Kumler Outreach Ministries in Springfield.

An offering will also be taken for the Ordinands' Trip in Spring 2018 during the Service of Ordination and Commissioning. This trip is used to form spiritual leaders at the beginning of their ministry.

MMDC Collections at Annual Conference

Attendees to 2017 Annual Conference are urged to have their congregations collect items for the Midwest Mission Distribution Center. A truck will be located at the Peoria Civic Center to accept those donations during the Annual Conference.

  • Kitchen dishwashing gloves
  • Insect repellent spray, 6 to 14 oz. (ex. Off, Cutter)
  • Scouring pads
  • Pens -- no advertising
  • Protractors

COLLECTION UPDATE: The Illinois Great Rivers Conference donated 2,129 pounds of supplies and $3,024 in monetary gifts. It was a good collection and the Center is very thankful to all those that contributed. We were also glad to help facilitate the collection of “undies” for the Fair Hope Children’s Ministry.

The Center will also be collecting the following items for Fair Hope Ministry, a Danville-area agency in the Iroquois River District. Churches are encouraged to have an Undie Sunday prior to Annual Conference to collect these items:

  • Socks -- Infants 0-3 months to boys and girls large (4-10 girls and 3-9 boys).
  • Onesies
  • Underwear -- All sizes from 2T-3T to girls size 16 and boys 18-20

COLLECTION UPDATE: The Annual Conference provided 2,487 pairs of socks, 2,058 pairs of underwear and 447 onesies.

However, we also know of a couple of churches from our area that didn't bring their items to Peoria and are going to bring them directly to the mission.

On behalf of the Board, thank you for the publicity and we are hoping we can do this drive again in the future as well.

We figured that what was just collected will last about 4-6 months.
