Celebrating 100 Years of UMM

2008 marks the 100th anniversary celebration of United Methodist Men. Meeting in Baltimore in 1908, the Methodist Episcopal Church General Conference authorized the formation of Methodist Brotherhoods, the forerunner of United Methodist Men.

The goal of United Methodist Men is to help men grow in Christ so others may know Christ.

In 1940, the General Conference established a General Board of Lay Activities with a Department of Methodist Men. The name Methodist Men was adopted with the first charters being issued in 1942. Within nine years, there were 2,500 chartered groups with the number doubling by 1953 to 5,000 charters. In 1962, Methodist Men recorded its 18,000th charter.

In the Evangelical United Brethren Church, a new Otterbein Brotherhood organization was formed and it merged with the Methodist Men in 1968.
