Five Day Academy for Spiritual Formation

The Five-Day Academy for Spiritual Formation is a program of Upper Room Ministries, providing an opportunity for clergy and laity to tune their hearts toward God through a daily rhythm of prayer, worship, learning and reflection. Eacy day includes teachings by gifted spiritual leaders to deepen our walk with God, periods of silence, morning and evening prayer, Eucharist and an opportunity to share with and encourage one another. 

What does it cost?

Registrations before March 8, 2013 cost $500 per person, which includes tuition, private room and bath, and all meals. Registration cost after March 8, 2013 will be $525 per person. A $100 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of registration. All payments are due on April 1, 2013. A WORD TO THE WISE: Don't delay too long. Our 2011 academy filled up early!

Does the Five Day Academy qualify for continuing education credit?

Yes. If you choose to seek credit, you will be provided with the necessary form to be signed by the faculty. The form must then be submitted to the leadership team with a $15 payment at the conclusion of the event. A commitment to full-time participation by all participants is expected.

Teaching faculty

Jerry WebberJerry Webber is the leadership and the vision caster behind The Center for Christian Spirituality, a ministry of Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. He is a husband, father, son, brother and friend who finds life living as an explorer. Devoting himself for the last 20 years to the exploration of prayer and soul, Jerry is a writer, teacher and companion to persons on the spiritual journey. He will be focusing his teaching this week on the parables as tools for spiritual guidance and direction. Recommended reading in advance includes Thomas Keating's Meditations on the Parables of Jesus and Wendy Miller's Jesus Our Spiritual Director: A PilgrimageThrough the Gospels.

 

 Carmen GaudCarmen Gaud, until her imminent retirement, is the editor of the Spanish edition of The Upper Room (El Aposento Alto). She is an elder and a member of the Desert Southwest Conference, having pastored churches in Puerto Rico and the United States. Carmen and Jerry have worked successfully together as a team at a previous Five Day Academy. Carmen will be focusing this week on the spiritual disciplines (both new and old). By the end of the week, participants will be encouraged to formulate a rule of life for themselves. Recommended advance reading includes Marjorie Thompson's Soul Feast and Spiritual Traditions for the Contemporary Church by Robin Maas and Gabriel O'Donnell.
