| Abstract |
The first several pages of the book are handwritten historical entries, with a chronological list of pastors, circuits and presiding elders for 1836-1891. Five pages of historical information follows, documenting 1877-1882, holiness meetings, evangelistic meetings and financial problems. The remainder of the book is sectioned for probationers (1869-1882); alphabetical sections for full connection members (1869-1883); baptisms (1869-1882); marriages (1869-1882); and class lists. Information recorded is sporadic in detail - occasional residences, final disposition of membership - on the membership pages. Baptismal information generally gives parents' names for child baptisms, residences and officiating minister. Class lists include the participants, leader and place of meeting. |

According to the McDonough County history, Rev. David Carter organized Pennington Point at the home of John Greenup in New Salem Township. It was one of the oldest Methodist churches in the county. The first church building was erected in 1856 with another building in 1876. The second building was damaged by a tornado a few years later but was repaired and moved to another site south of the cemetery. In 1943 a fire destroyed the building. The congregation bought and moved a church from the Bethany Free Methodists in Eldorado Township.
The church closed in 1968. |
