| Abstract |
The membership register, begun in 1953, is divided into sections and then chronologically. Baptisms (1953-2005) lists the parents names (if infant), city of residence, birth date and baptism date, and officiating minister. Prepatory membership (1955-1968) includes name of prepatory member and disposition of membership. Full membership section has been relisted alphabetically & numerically several times, with the first attempt at full listing in 1966. Oldest recorded date of membership received is 1907, latest is 2005. Most membership information contains individual names, place of residence, dates received and final disposition of membership. Marriages (1956-1985) and deaths (1959-2005) are the final sections. Several pages in the back are devoted to recording a written history of the church. |

Methodist worship began in Pitman Township about 1850, meeting in the Friendship Schoolhouse, 2 miles south of Waggoner. Later the Providence Methodist Church was built in 1863 and when the railroad came through in 1880, the town of Waggoner was laid out. In 1890 an organizational meeting was held to elect trustees for the construction of a new church.
In June 1891 the first church building was dedicated, with Waggoner MEC on a circuit with Nilwood. In 1893 the Waggoner Circuit was formed with Farmersville, Lone Elm and Providence. In 1903 the women organized the WSCS and later in 1908 another women's society, Methodist Guild, was organized.
In 1917 the congregation added a basement and a south wing. The church was remodeled many times over the years, including the stained glass windows. In 1991, the congregation celebrated the centennial with special recognitions of long time members. The church closed in 2005 with the last worship service Sep. 22, 2005. |
