Lexington First credits circuit riders Stephen Beggs, William Crissey and Henry Maynard for visiting the early settlers at the Patton settlement to establish Lexington's early preaching points. The earliest built church house was in 1845 and was located by the Patton settlement in Pleasant Hill and the first organized church body in McLean County. This church was in use four years when Rev. Nimrod Gregg from the Rock River Conference established a Methodist Society, meeting in houses, a schoolhouse and the United Brethren church.
By 1855, Gregg gained enough support to construct a small frame building for a house of worship and in 1856 this Methodist Society received a legal charter. Additions - such as classroom space, an auditorium, basement and kitchen - were constructed over the next several decades. In 1955 an education wing was added on the north side while Rev. Buchholtz served the congregation. As of 2004, the church continues as a vibrant and growing congregation. |
