Admin/Biog History Presbyterian preacher, Paruach Owen, was the first preacher within the town limits, preaching in a log cabin that stood in the southwest corner of section 4 in 1835. It was until the 1840s that a Methodist preacher, Steven Beggs, held regular worship services in a building used for carding wool. Shortly thereafter, the Methodist class dispersed because of a "spiritualism" movement and irregular services were conducted by an intinerant preacher from Knoxville. In the 1860s a United Brethren preacher came to Maquon and held sevices in the school house, which was later sold by the town at public auction to the women of the class.
