I began this journey as your DS July 1, 2014. I attended DS "boot camp," or what's also been called "charm school," in late August 2014. Though it was helpful, the greatest teacher is the experience. Like, as Pastor, coming out of seminary or License to Preach school, there are helpful "tools" you receive; nothing really can prepare you for "the real world." No one will be there on the first day of the job with a "to-do" list of tasks to be accomplished.
When appointed to a new pastorate or ministry position; I have always jumped in with both feet and gone to work. While the administrative work often is urgent, it is not the most important priority. 95% of what we do is about building relationships - first, relationship with God and, second, a relationship with other people.
I have attempted to do that as your DS. All of us have a need to feel important. We were created with that need. I have worked hard at being a good DS for all people - clergy and lay, and all size churches - whether small or large.
The church of Jesus Christ has a unique mission to fulfill in the world, and every DS as "Chief Missional Strategist," has the same desire to see each church in his/her District become all that God intends for them to become.
I leave this post as DS feeling positive about the work we have accomplished. My goal in any ministry position is the same goal every pastor should have: leave the church or the ministry stronger and more effective than when you first arrived.
I know that only you as clergy and laity will fully be able to answer whether or not that was true of my ministry as your DS for these three years. I have my faults and limitations. I readily admit to those. But, I hope one thing you will take away from my ministry is that I gave maximum effort and I worked tirelessly to strengthen and make the MRD more effective in resourcing churches to accomplish the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
Thank you for the awesome privilege to serve you these past three years. This ministry has matured and prepared me for my next steps in ministry as the new Lead Pastor of Springfield First UMC.
Pray for this transition. Pray for me, your new DS Rose Booker-Jones, and our Episcopal Leader, Bishop Frank Beard. I consider it a privilege to have served alongside both Bishop Keaton and Bishop Beard.
Thank you and may God Bless you!
