Billy Coatney, 86, of Fairfield, passed away on Monday, September 11, 2017 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital. Billy was born February 26, 1931 in East Alton, Madison County, the son of Earl and Edith (Rundell) Coatney. He married Cleo (Sonricker) on November 18, 1949, at Bethalto Methodist Church.


Billy is survived by his devoted sons, Roger Coatney and wife Linda of Mt. Vernon, Thomas Coatney and wife Allison of Virginia, IL.; loving daughter Carol Boyles of Fairfield. Precious grandchildren, Sara, Erin, Beth Ann, Tyler, Bren, Ann, Daniel, Samantha, Ethan, Alex; cherished great-grandchildren Maggie, Samantha, Evan, Carly, Robert, Kayley, Audrey, Marley, Greyson, Lilly, Colt, Evin, Beckham, Paisley, Remington; appreciated sister Betty Rhodes of Carlinville; many nieces and nephews.

Billy is preceded in death by both his parents, his wife of 61 years Cleo (Sonricker), three sisters, and five brothers

Rev. Coatney graduated from McKendree College and Boston University School of Theology. He was ordained on June 11, 1967 and served as an elder in the United Methodist Church. Rev. Coatney and his wife Cleo served churches in Illinois, Maine, and Massachusetts for 50 years. He was the Pastor of the local charge churches in Wayne County, including Cisne, Geff, and Johnsonville Methodist Church. He was also a member of Ellen Moore Methodist Church and House of Prayer in Fairfield. Along with his faithful service to the lord, Rev. Coatney was a licensed electrician working for Standard Oil in Wood River, IL. In his spare time Rev. Coatney enjoyed woodworking and being involved in the Rotary Club.

Celebration of life services will be held privately by the family with Pastor Russell Anderson & Rev. Brad Henson officiating. The final resting place for Rev. Coatney will be Bethalto Methodist Cemetery. The family asks that you consider in Rev.
