Jacob Nathan, the District Superintendent from the district in Liberia that we relate to, is coming the end of May. He will come first to the Detroit conference on May 14th and then here on May 26th. So he will be available for possibly 4 Sundays, May 27, June 3, June 10, and June 17. He just obtained his visa and Cindy and Jane will be getting him a ticket to fly here. Detroit is taking care of his travel here, but we will pay for the ticket to and from Liberia. Churches who want him on the Sundays had been asked to make a commitment to them and to help with Jacob’s expense by paying $300-500.00. Churches who have committed are West Salem Zion, Mt. Vernon First and Vandalia First. Some groups are talking about doing cluster events with him while he is here. The Conference Liberian Task Force is working with 4-H to match up 4-H groups with different parts of Liberia to do the usual 4-H projects with animals and growing plants. Jacob is a teacher and has started youth camps and would like to be able to visit with the camps we have going on. He would also like to visit with the UM Village and see how we relate to a denominational continuing care facility. Cindy said that as a conference we are going to change how we relate to the Liberian conference and will be doing more local church to local church relationships.
Jacob’s housing for Annual conference time is arranged and Cindy and Jane will also be offering him housing while he is here.
Jane will do his scheduling and arrange housing as needed.
Jane and Cindy will purchase his plane tickets
There is about $1400.00 to help with his time here and we will probably need $1000.00 more, which we think is manageable.
If you are interested in hosting Jacob and having him in your church to speak, call Jane at the district office.
Fall Training sessions:
The February training was well received and some have asked for a repeat or continuation. After some discussion a decision was made to set the date of October 13th for a meeting using the format of Hospitality from the Fruitful Congregations material. Brad Henson, Bill Bunnage, Jeremy Henson and Bumper Quick will be asked to work on it. We would like to do another one in the spring and have an on-going cycle of the 5 Fruitful Congregations themes.
Transforming Conflict Teams have been trained and will be doing workshops, especially in churches which will be receiving cross cultural appointments.
Intracultural Relationships Teams have also been in training and will help churches receive cross cultural appointment and those that will be serving multiple church charges or parishes.
Cathy Seaton, Alice True, Jim Allison, and David Ducommon will be attending the Congregational Development training in St Louis in August.
The Superintendency Committee met on April 17th and discussed several issues. Cindy will be having cluster charge conferences this fall instead of in each church. She is also planning to meet with each SPPR/PPR committee, especially those who have had a pastor for 5 years or more or who request a move. When she meets with them she will plan time before or after to meet with the treasurers, financial secretaries and the pastor. Pastor consultations begin in July.
Saturday, April 28th is prayer time for Kaskaskia District for General conference delegates and actions.
Jane is coordinating the youth representatives to Annual Conference, Jessie George, Clorissa Kertner, Matt Reed, Nathan Delaney. They will have a Friday night pizza party and a table at the all conference dinner. Sally moved to approve those 4 and to give each of them $50.00. Dennis second. Passed.
Dennis Gambill has stepped down as Sandoval Shalom director. 2 young men will be taking his place. Lukus Petra will be on the DMT from now on.
Matt Henson will be the new youth coordinator. His ministry, Living the Adventure, is taking 2 more trips to Haiti this year, one in July, which is nearly full with young people, and one in October.
Next meeting: MONDAY, JULY 23RD AT 6:30 P.M. AT Flora First UMC.
Cathy move to adjourn, Jane second. Passed.
Bill gave the closing prayer.
Secretary, Nancy Myers
