you Theology: Loving God, Loving Neighbor

YouTheology of the Illinois Great Rivers-St. Louis Pan Methodist Churches (AME, CME, AMEZ and UM  churches) are glad to offer a youth experience that is geared to empower and give youth an understanding of our Wesleyan heritage and faith.

Each year, high school students are selected to be part of a community of "youTheologians" through a nominations and application process.  Through this community their leadership skills are honed for more effective service in the church and the world. This happens as they:
  • explore vocation,
  • do theological reflection,
  • engage in hands-on ministry in rural and urban settings,
  • look at how their faith can make a difference in today's world,
  • learn the distinctiveness of the Methodist tradition,
  • practice spiritual disciplines,
  • plan and lead worship, and
  • deepen their faith in God.

To facilitate this, youth study with pastors and other church leaders, members of the wider community who are in various vocations, people who are engaged in public witness in The Capital and other regions of the country. They also use material prepared by faculty members of the seminary, St. Paul School of Theology. In addition, these young people have adult mentors that they select.  The youth and mentor meet frequently throughout the program year for intentional conversations outlined in the curriculum that intersect with and build on the youTheology activities/events. There are also online sessions where youth interact with other participants and program staff to reflect on their experience at the previous weekend session and prepare for the next one.

Youth will meet over the course of a school year, beginning in July and running through June. The July session will be held at Little Grassy campsite in Makanda and will include one day of learning and hands-on ministry in a rural setting. Youth will also participate in online discussions. These all result in intensive learning, service, and theological reflection.
