Following Jesus Daily

John 12: 20-26

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.

Following Jesus Daily

Let’s meditate on verse 26: “If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me, and where I am, there My servant will be also.” “Follow Me.” What does it mean to follow Jesus? I don’t think we can define following Jesus in any one specific way. The verse goes on to say “where I am, there My servant will be also.” Where is Jesus? Everywhere. There is no limit to the places we would find Jesus. Therefore, to follow Jesus means we must be willing to accept Jesus’ call personally on our lives and go where we are directed. For one person, following Jesus might mean to stay at home and raise godly children. To someone else, following Jesus might mean serving in a prison ministry. The possibilities are limitless.

When Jesus called me, I had a vision of going across the water. Today I am serving as a missionary at Southern Philippines Methodist Colleges (SPMC), across the ocean from the United States. Along the way Jesus prepared me. First, I was a teacher for over 25 years. Today I am teaching. In my path to becoming a missionary I was trained as a deaconess. Today I serve at SPMC where deaconesses are trained to go out and serve in churches.

The question is not: Has Jesus called you? The verse says, “if anyone serves Me, let him follow Me.” If you are a believer, then you must follow Jesus. Each person must be open to personally follow Jesus wherever led on a daily basis.

Prayer

Loving God, you did not ask us to follow you blindly. Thank you for your promise to be with us. May we seek your guidance daily.
