Here is a checklist to help you navigate the initial steps required by the Book of Discipline and the Illinois Great Rivers Conference. The list will aid you as you move through the required steps toward candidacy and possible ordained ministry or ministry as a Licensed Local Pastor in The United Methodist Church.
Contact your pastor, campus minister or any United Methodist elder or deacon and get from him/her a copy of The Christian as Minister.
Read and discuss The Christian as Minister with your pastor, campus minister, or any United Methodist elder or deacon, taking time to discern and examine your call to ministry. The review of this book must be completed PRIOR TO your meeting with your District Superintendent.
Contact the District Office to begin the formal process into candidacy. At that visit you will be asked to complete release forms, pay fees and be told about Passage UMC. Passage UMC is our digital filing system. Every candidate must be able to use a computer and have an email address.
Following your contact with the District Office, you will receive an email inviting you to activate your Passage UMC account (this email comes from firstname.lastname@example.org). Once your Passage UMC account is activated, click on the IGR Pre-Candidacy Track and complete all the steps. ALL THE STEPS in PASSAGE UMC must be completed and all required documents uploaded before your meeting with the District Superintendent. This includes the reading and discussion of The Christian as Minister with your pastor/campus minister.
Make an appointment to meet with your District Superintendent. Following that meeting, the District Superintendent will either affirm your decision to pursue ministry, delay the request and ask you to work on some things or deny your request.
Once the District Superintendent affirms your request to pursue pastoral ministry, someone from the Ministerial Excellence office will contact you about the next scheduled Candidacy Summit (you must attend a Candidacy Summit).
