What to do now?

Here is a check list to help you as you pastor to guide a church member/participant as they explore and examine possible calls to Licensed or Ordained Ministry. Below you will find the initial steps required as you guide this potential candidate through the beginning steps toward candidacy and possible Licensed or Ordained Ministry.

If you have any additional questions concerning these steps toward candidacy or are confused in any way, please contact the Board's Registrar/Administrative Assistant.

Read and discuss

When you are contacted by someone inquiring about Licensed/Ordained Ministry, give them a copy of The Christian as Minister. If you don't have a copy get one from your District Superintendent. Review and discuss The Christian as Minister with the person, helping them to begin to discern and clarify their call to ministry.

Communicate with District Superintendent

Contact the District Superintendent, in writing, indicating that this person has contacted you and is meeting with you to discern their call into the Ordained Ministry. In this initial communication with the District Superintendent, outline the person's current status in the church, what leadership roles they have filled in the church, and your evaluation of their call to ministry. Have the person (inquiring candidate) contact the District Office so they can begin to prepare for their meeting with the District Superintendent. Please remember: Have the person make an appointment to discuss their call to ministry with the District Superintendent ONLY AFTER they have completed The Christian as Minister with you.

Prepare Staff/Parish Relations Committee

ONLY AFTER the person (inquiring candidate) has completed the Candidacy Retreat should you begin to prepare your Staff/Parish Relations Committee and your Administrative Council/Board for a meeting with the inquiring candidate. The inquiring candidate should have prepared written answers to Wesley's Historic Questions for the Committee to review prior to gathering. Inquiring candidate must receive a 3/4 positive vote from the S/PPRC to move forward. Following this meeting and affirmative vote, the inquiring candidate will send the chairperson an email containing a link for the Chairperson to complete for the inquiring candidate's file. THIS IS MANDATORY.

Meeting with Charge/Church Conference

After receiving a positive recommendation from your S/PPRC the inquiring candidate must also receive a 3/4 positive vote from your congregation's Charge/Church Conference. Following this meeting and affirmative vote the inquiring candidate will send the chairperson an email containing a link for the Chairperson to complete for the inquiring candidate's file. THIS IS MANDATORY. This ends your formal participation in the Candidacy Process, but you are encouraged to continue to nurture, guide and access this person's call to ministry.
