Della Marie Yates, age 99 of Lawrenceville, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2014 in Lawrenceville at the United Methodist Village-North Campus.
She was born August 24, 1914 in Pope County, Illinois, the daughter of William A. Sistler and Fay Hazel Sistler. She married Rev. Earl U. Yates, District-Carbondale District, Noveber 24, 1937. She was preceded in death by her husband, her father and mother, her only brother, Laurel Wayne Sistler, and a step-daughter.
Della attended a one room school for eight years and then graduated from Golconda High School. She attended Southern Illinois University and taught four years in the elementary schools for Pope County before getting married. She and her husband traveled to all of the Methodist churches in Carbondale District helping the ministers and churches with problems.
After the the death of her husband, she went back to school and received her Master's Degree. She then taught six years in Bridgeport Township High School and twenty years at Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel.
Teaching was the joy of her life. Besides public teaching she organized a young adult class at the Methodist Church of Lawrenceville in 1947. It was Class #15, and today it is active and maintains about 50 members. She was a dedicated Christian.
Della is survived by a grandson,Russell Earl Gaar, a niece and her daughter, Laura and Laurel Pagel, cousins, David Stuteville and family and Paul Stuteville, and special friends, Gene and Betty Brown.
A funeral service for Della Marie Yates will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at the Cunningham-Young Funeral Home in Lawrenceville. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place in the Lawrenceville City Cemetery.
