Carl Fredrick Dunker

Reverend Dr. Carl Fredrick Dunker, a native of Cairo, Illinois passed away March 7, 2022 in Asheboro, NC. Carl was born November 27, 1929 in Cairo, Illinois. He was a graduate of Cairo High School, Cairo, IL 1947; Greenville College, Greenville, IL 1953; Christian Theological Seminary, Butler University, Indianapolis, IN 1956; International Bible College and Seminary, Independence, MO 1990. At the age of 14 in 1943, Carl surrendered his life to Jesus Christ during a revival meeting a few days before Christmas, First United Methodist Church, Cairo, IL. Before this change of heart, he had only attended Sunday School less than 12 times and a worship service only once. Also, he spent many of his Sunday afternoons and grade school days in a tavern called the Barrel House. It was at a revival meeting in August 1947 at open country Community Methodist Church, Dogtooth Bend, IL where he met his future wife Barbara Ann Ridgeway. At another revival meeting in the village of Sandusky, IL, Carl answered the call to spread the gospel. Carl preached his first sermon in May 1948, Tigert Memorial United Methodist Church, Cairo, IL and later that August he became a weekend supply preacher for Thebes United Methodist Church, Thebes, IL. Carl continued to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ for the next seventy years throughout Illinois and North Carolina. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 KJV. Carl is survived by his children David of Asheboro, NC, Barbara Diane (Charles P. Roe) of Silver Spring, MD, and Steven (Gwyneth Nunag) of New Bern, NC; grandchildren Mark Dunker (Angela and children Austin and Meredith), Jason Dunker (Kisha and daughter Peyton), and Sarah G. Dunker all of North Carolina. He is also survived by his sisters Kay Niestrath (Nick) of Villa Ridge, IL, Mary Jane Edmonds (Randy) of Anna, IL, Judy Wadley of Mounds, IL; brothers Jack Dunker of Belknap, IL and Wilbur Dunker (Peggy) of West Paducah, KY; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Ann Ridgeway, parents Lavonia Caldwell and Harry Joseph Dunker, sister Shirley Dunker, and brother Joe Kenneth Dunker. Services were held March 12, 2022 at Tigert Memorial United Methodist Church, Cairo, IL with interment March 12 at Green Lawn Memorial Gardens, Villa Ridge, IL.
