Patty Jo Walden (nee Green) passed away on Wednesday (Sept. 23, 2015) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Patty Jo was born on June 21, 1929, the second daughter of Dewey and Gladys McDowell Green. Her early life was spent on a farm in Cave-in-Rock, Ill., where she attended a one-room schoolhouse before her family moved to Champaign.
She graduated from Champaign High School in 1946. She married Donald Walden of Urbana on June 29, 1952.
She received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Northwestern University and a Master's of Science degree in nursing from St. Xavier University.
Her nursing career was largely in the Chicago area as a nursing educator in the specialized field of mental health. She worked at the Evangelical, Ravenswood and Augustana Schools of Nursing. She also worked for the American Journal of Nursing.
Upon returning to Champaign, she served on the faculty of the Lakeview School of Nursing and the University of Illinois School of Nursing.
Patty Jo was active as a skilled and gracious counselor in the churches served by her husband, Donald, a United Methodist minister. Her strong soprano voice could be heard over most of the congregation. She loved singing, as well as playing the piano and the marimbas.
She loved fashion and it wasn't unusual for her students to comment that she also taught them how to accessorize.
Patty Jo is survived by her husband, Donald; her three daughters, Gale and Michelle Walden, both of Urbana, and Joelle Walden of Sacramento, Calif.; her sister, Beulah Cabezas of San Jose, Costa Rica; and four grandchildren, (Claire, Jordan, and Carter Billingsley and Zella Walden) as well as her poodle, Pip.
She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1203 W. Green St., Urbana, where there will be a 1 p.m. visitation, and a service at 2 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 26. There will be a family committal at a later date.
Memorial gifts are invited for the Wesley Evening Food Pantry at 1203 W. Green St., Urbana, IL 61801.
Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy, is in charge of arrangements.
