Kenneth Asmussen, 80, formerly of Edinburg, Illinois passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on July 13, 2017 in Panama City, Florida.
He was born on December 7, 1936 in Clinton, Iowa, to Maynard and Marge, and had one brother, Richard (Margie). Ken was blessed with 51 years of marriage to the sparkly Ruthie, who preceded him in death on March 18, 2011.
Ken had a full career as one of the pioneering computer analysts for the Illinois Secretary of State. But his deepest love was serving the body of Christ with his wife, Ruthie. In addition to working as part-time pastor of the Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church, Ken was a lay speaker at numerous congregations, actively supported the Central Illinois Emmaus Community, assisted with prison ministries, and led countless Bible studies and prayer groups. Ken and Ruthie enjoyed their "retirement years" at their home in Panama City Beach, worshipping at the Gulfview United Methodist Church. After Ruthie's passing, Ken was surrounded by a wonderful family of faith at the Port Washington United Methodist Church.
Ken is survived by his three children: Sherri Leahy (Brian), Karen Miller (Lowell), and Kurt Asmussen (Kendra). "Poppy" loved to visit and was richly blessed by his 10 above-average grandchildren: Amanda, Maggie, Emily, Daniel, Brandon, Ellen, Thomas, Kayla, Madison, and Garrett. He was also a great grandfather to Liam, Mason, and Makaylee.
Graveside services will be held at the Auburn Cemetery in Auburn, Illinois on August 12, followed by a celebration luncheon at the Edinburg United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Port Washington Church Ken Asmussen Memorial Fund, 1290 North Highway 395, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida 32459.
